New York City
On May 1st, students from the music department co-curricular programme will be travelling to New York City. We will be performing at the South Street Seaport, touring the city and attending performances. We return on May 6 in the morning. Further details will be posted as we get closer to the dates.
Concert Band and Concert Choir:
The uniform for both of these ensembles is "White on the top and Black on the bottom". The idea is for the group to look cohesive and to make sure that individuals do not stand out in such away as to take away or distract attention from the group. We are a team.
To clarify: Please wear a completely white top with sleeves and preferably a collar. Please avoid scoop neck tops. There should be no pattern on the shirt - just white. Sleeveless tops are not shirts.
Black on the bottom means: Black pants or a longish black skirt. No mini skirts. If you wear a skirt, also wear black nylons. ***Shoes must be black and socks must be black - all black.****
Jazz Bands:
The uniform for these ensembles is all black. Please wear a black shirt that can be worn with a tie. We provide the ties.
Gospel choir:
Usually, this ensemble wears all black with red accessories.
We have several fundraising opportunities to raise money for the department and for the yearly music trip.
Entertainment Books
In the first semester of each year, we sell "The Entertainment Book". This is a book full of coupons for many local restaurants, movie theatres and other events and places in Pickering and the GTA. There are coupons for the Zoo, for various golf courses. There is a card that you can register online to get discounts on car rentals and hotels when you travel. Students get various prizes for selling five or more books. Money from this fundraiser helps us to provide new instruments and equipment.
Loblaws Cards
Throughout the year students can raise funds for the music trip through our "Loblaws Card" fundraiser. In this fundraiser, students sell $100.00 Loblaws gift cards (also good in any store with President's Choice products such as Zehrs, Independent, and No Frills) for $100.00. We use this fundraiser to help defray the costs of the spring music trip. Students are credited with a certain percentage of each card they sell.
How does it work? Students bring cheques made out to Dunbarton High School and give them to Miss Joyce. Often, they can receive the cards by the end of the same day or the next. They then take the cards to whoever gave them the cheque.
Speghetti Dinner
In March of each year, we hold the "Speghetti Dinner". This event happens in the school cafeteria. It costs $15.00. For each ticket sold, students are credited with $10.00 towards defraying trip expenses. This very popular evening features music performances from various school ensembles and student groups. Students audition to participate in one of two concerts (one concert for each sitting of the meal). We also have delicious deserts provided by students and their families.
Vocal Cabarets
There are three Vocal Cabarets per year. Tickets are sold at the door for $10.00. These concerts feature the school choirs and many soloists. Students audition to perform at these events. The first two tickets for the yearly vocal cabarets are put a general music fundraising "pot". All the rest are credited to individual students to defray music trip expenses. So, if a student brings two people to both of the first two vocal cabarets, he or she will be credited with $20.00 towards trip expenses. The third cabaret fundraising is credited to the next year's trip.
We hope that our fundraisers will make the trips more affordable and help us to continue to provide exciting opportunities for our students to learn, perform and enjoy music.
Thank you for your support.
