If you are a prospective philosophy student in gr 9, 10, 11 or 12 here is some info for you that will help you to make up you mind whether or not you want to take philosophy. (Keep in mind that 10s can take the 11 and 11s the 12 as well as 12s the 11 all with permission).
Here is a link to 107 anonymous student course evaluations for the philosophy classes that I have taught in the past.
Click on "show responses" in #21 to see a summary of their general comments about how they felt about the course.
Here is a link to a great video explaining why every student should major in philosophy (better chance at passing, better chance at grad school, high income, etc.)
In the last 2 years about 60 grads have dropped in to visit and have said that in some cases the course changed their lives/ really helped them with writing/ prepared them for uni. better than any other course they took.
Students may also be interested to know I have a BA and MA in philosophy and am starting a PhD in teaching philosophy (particularly why it should be a mandatory course); was a pedagological advisor for the latest Philosophy text; was the only Canadian high school teacher at the international Philosophy Learning And Teaching Organization conference (get it...PLATO :-) at Columbia last year.
Finally, in the gr. 11 course students with 70% or higher will be exempted from the exam and any 11 or 12 student submitting written work on time can redo it as many times as they want for an improved mark. In addtion to this their writing portfolio will have the lowest two marks dropped in calculating their mark in this area.
Hope to see you soon!
Mr. Dougall
