Labour Relations Update Print

Welcome back to all of our students and staff – we hope everyone enjoyed a happy holiday season!

Over the winter break, The Minister of Education, Laurel Broten, announced that  collective agreements for the education sector are now in place across the province for two years. With the new contracts in place, unions will no longer be in a legal strike position. In addition, the Minister announced that the Putting Students First Act will be repealed at the end of January 2013.

With these latest developments there remain many unanswered questions for our students and our school communities. At this point, the Durham District School Board is working with our employee groups and the Ministry of Education to understand and implement the latest developments.

We remain committed to open communication with our school communities and will continue to provide updates on our websites, via the news media and through the DDSB’s Twitter account, @Durhamdsb as new information becomes available.

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Parents and Guardians, please be aware that the Durham District School Board does NOT provide accident insurance coverage for student injuries. Families should recognize that there is always a potential risk of injury with field trips, sports and other student activities both on and off school grounds. Although precautions are taken to ensure the protection of students, accidents can and do happen. Some injuries result in medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans and can be very costly. As a parent or guardian, you become responsible for these expenses.

In accordance with the Education Act we do make available a Student Accident Insurance Program for students. Participation in this program is voluntary and the costs are to be paid by the parent or guardian.

For your convenience, we have arranged access to a Student Accident Insurance Policy through Reliable Life Insurance Company. This program offers a variety of plans and benefits at affordable prices (starting at only $6.00 per year).           Some of the benefits included are:

  • dental expenses (resulting from an accident)
  • fracture or dislocation
  • rehabilitation
  • emergency transportation
  • total and permanent disability

If your child participates in co-curricular activities or activities outside the school day, there is also a plan tailored to your needs. All rates are one-time annual premiums. For complete details please refer to the “Insure my Kids Protection Plan 2012 Application Brochure” that was sent home with your child or visit the website at: www.insuremykids.com.

The insurance agreement is between you and Reliable Life Insurance Company. If you wish to subscribe you can also apply directly on-line at: www.insuremykids.com.

Any questions should be directed to Reliable Life Insurance Company toll free at

1-800-463-KIDS (5437).

Student Accident Insurance is especially valuable for today’s active children.

FRAUDULENT SCAM TARGETS POTENTIAL STUDENTS

Durham Police are warning the public, especially potential students, following reported incidents of a recent fraud scam targeting youths for their financial and personal identification information.

During the month of June, reported incidents of a fraudulent phone scam involving students as potential victims surfaced throughout the Region. The scam involves residences receiving a phone call from a private incoming phone number in which a male caller advises he is calling from the National Student Loan Centre. The male suspect indicates he is following-up on a loan application from a student within the residence.

In some circumstances, the suspect then speaks with a student youth and requests the victim fax a copy of their passport and social insurance number (SIN) to the loan centre in order to facilitate processing a government issued student loan. Occasionally, the suspect offers to accept other forms of official identification if wary victims will not divulge their passport or SIN information. A fax number is provided by the suspect to complete this transaction.

DRPS would like to warn the public especially students involved in current loan applications of this recent type of fraudulent activity and would like to remind all persons to keep their personal identification private and secure at all times.
